Founded in 1960 as the University College of Zululand and based at KwaDlangezwa and Richards Bay, UNIZULU has grown from a first intake of 41 students into one of KwaZulu-Natal's leading comprehensive universities. Here's exactly what you need to apply for 2027, and by when.

About the university
The University of Zululand was established in 1960 as the University College of Zululand, a constituent college academically affiliated to the University of South Africa. The first intake of 41 students, including five women, began classes under Professor P.A.W. Cook, the first Rector, and the institution was officially opened on 8 March 1961. It became a fully independent university in the years that followed, and is the only comprehensive university north of the uThukela (Tugela) River in KwaZulu-Natal.
UNIZULU's main campus is at KwaDlangezwa, with a second, urban campus at Richards Bay that was launched in 2009 to strengthen ties with local industry and the maritime sector. Across both campuses the university now offers roughly 252 accredited degree, diploma and certificate courses to a student body of well over 15,000.
Good to know
UNIZULU applications are not submitted directly to the university — undergraduate applicants apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO), which is shared with several other KwaZulu-Natal institutions, and select UNIZULU as one of their choices.

UNIZULU applications run through CAO, and certain high-demand programmes may close earlier once places fill up.

CAO applications open on 1 March 2026. The general closing date for most undergraduate programmes is 30 September 2026, and late applications are accepted (at a higher fee) until 31 October 2026. Health Sciences and other high-demand programmes may close earlier — always confirm on the CAO or official UNIZULU website.
Applications go through the CAO, which charges a non-refundable fee of around R250 for on-time applications. Applying after the general closing date usually attracts a higher, late fee. Proof of payment must be submitted with your CAO application.
Most undergraduate programmes require a National Senior Certificate plus an Admission Point Score (APS) that meets the chosen programme's threshold. Some programmes, particularly in Health Sciences, set additional subject-specific requirements.
You apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO), a shared system for several KwaZulu-Natal institutions — you cannot apply directly on the UNIZULU website. Select UNIZULU and your programme choices on the CAO form.
